Day 3 of Fictional Band February: Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes!
Yes, everyone’s favorite jizz playing cantina band! If (for some reason!) you don’t recognize these Biths, they are the entertainment in the Mos Eisley cantina in Star Wars. And yes, I’m being serious - they play jizz (and jatz!) music.
As expected, there is a whole backstory to these guys. Did you know that shortly after Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes arrived on Tatooine from their home planet of Clak’Dor VII, Jabba the Hutt contracted them to play exclusively for them? But then they accepted a gig to play at a rival crimelord’s wedding reception? AND THEN they lost their instruments from gambling so to pay off their debts they became the house band at the Mos Eisley cantina? Well, I didn’t until I read their Wookieepedia page. I’m guessing a lot of it was taken from the EU book ‘Tales from Mos Eisley Cantina’ that my brother has hanging around the house somewhere. (Honestly, the only EU books I’ve read are the Han Solo trilogy so my Star Wars knowledge isn’t the best!)
The two songs we hear in A New Hope are titled ‘Cantina Band #1’ and ‘Cantina Band #2’ on the soundtrack, but #1 is actually titled ‘Mad About Me.’ I’ve decided to share the second cue today because it’s a really nice tune that you don’t hear as much as the other one! And of course, both songs were composed by John Williams and according to Wookieepedia “Filmmaker George Lucas initially propost the inclusion of a jitterbug-like piece in the film, along the lines of jazz musician Bnny Goodman. As his inspiration, Lucas had the idea of beings in the far future trying to create their own version of Goodman’s style of music.” Pretty neat!
Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes line-up:
- Figrin D’an (kloo horn, gasn string drum)
- Ickabel G’ont (fanfar)
- Lirin Car’n (kloo horn)
- Nalan Cheel (bandfill)
- Tech Mo’r (Omnibox)
- Tedn Dahai (fanfar)
- Doikk Na’ts (fiz/Dorenian Beshniquel)
And yes, this is where I got the inspiration for my URL, in case you were wondering!
i mean, lets be honest here, who does not want to have two (or more) mounted unicorn heads in their home?
Oh my, I can’t even begin to explain how much I want this machine.
be still, my beating heart.
Ohhhhhh … I’m going to need this!
